Leslie Gardens Dinner

Celebrate With Us!

Salem-Keizer Education Foundation’s gardens team has grown—literally and figuratively—over the years.

On Oct. 25, 2016, Brenda Knobloch, Gardens Coordinator, and Joel Whitmore, FoodCorps, hosted a dinner for Leslie Middle School’s AVID students and their families.

Joel teaches a gardens & cooking class with the 6th grade students at Leslie, and all of his students adore him and his teaching style.

“He’s the coolest. We all call him ‘Joel-y-frijole-y.’ I miss his class the most,” stated a 7th grade AVID student who was in Joel’s gardening class the previous year.

The dinner included spaghetti squash with a red sauce, salad, garlic bread and homemade mashed potatoes. All of the ingredients were grown in the Leslie garden or brought in from local farms.

“What Joel does with these kids on a daily basis is amazing,” commented Brenda. “He orchestrated the dinner himself and completed it with a level-head. It was a great success.”

Thank you, Brenda and Joel, for incorporating an innovative way of learning into eleven schools throughout the district. It’s because of you, that every child, every day has the opportunity to be awesome.
