The seventh annual Salem-Keizer Education Foundation School Supply Drive kicks off Aug 1 and runs all month. This drive meets a critical need in our schools by restocking the School Supply Depot, a permanent, sustainable resource that provides year-round supplies to Salem-Keizer schools in need.
Community members can donate school supplies at the more than 85 businesses and organizations in Salem and Keizer. The drive helps take pressure off local teachers who often pay for school supplies out of their own pockets.
“Each year the drive grows with more participants so we are confident we’ll beat the volume of supplies from last year’s drive, which netted over 700,000 items for kids,” said SKEF Executive Director Krina Lee. “The need is profound. We know that 1 in 4 school kids live at or below the poverty level. The School Supply Depot gives our counselors and teachers a place to go to ensure students have all the tools and materials necessary to be successful in class.”
SKEF thanks Marion-Polk Food Share, Salem Health, D&O Garbage and Recycling and Sodexo for partnering with us on this event. SKEF has barrels at Starbucks (all locations), Kaiser Permanente, U.S. Bank and Salem Hospital. New locations this year include Haggen Foods, LaLumiere Massage Boutique and Epic Fitness.
Many sites are creating incentives to get supplies dropped off. Epic Fitness is offering 50 percent off their fitness center enrollment fees if you bring in three or more packages of supplies to donate. Half Penny Bar & Grill will hold a concert 9 p.m. August 14th featuring local legend Ty Curtis. The cover charge will be $7 or $5 if you bring in a school supplies donation. Town and Country Bowling is offering a discount coupon for school supply donations made at their donation site.
“Our partners are getting very creative and competitive,” said Lee. “We are so appreciative of their generosity.”
SKEF will pick up the collected supplies in early September. Volunteers will sort the supplies and restock the depot located at Walker Middle School. Individuals and businesses are encouraged to donate new school supplies at one of the collection sites listed below:
