Crossler Middle School student takes first in "Why I Love Oregon" Essay Contest
Elly Andrews loves Oregon for its creative weather, its Halloween rain that smells of pumpkin spice and beaches where she scavenges for agates and watches the sun dip into the ocean.
Those are just a few of the descriptions Andrews weaves into her winning "Why I love Oregon" essay contest. Salem-Keizer Education Foundation surprised the eighth-grader and her class with a Valentine's Day party Friday, Feb. 13 in honor of Oregon’s birthday.
The Crossler Middle School student also earned a $529 college savings account from Oregon College Savings Plan. Andrews’ essay was selected out of the 29 entries from six Salem-Keizer middle schools.
“I'm so thrilled for her,” said Crossler teacher Janice Lyday. “She is one of the most sensitive, creative spirits I know.”
The “Why I Love Oregon” essay contest provides student writers with the opportunity to share their opinions in a real and authentic way to an audience beyond the classroom. It gives them a chance to test the power of words and to witness the impact their writing can have on others.
